Year 2 Curriculum
This term our topic is: Towers, Tunnels and Turrets!
This is mainly a design and technology based topic and one we think the children will really enjoy, as it will involve lots of creative ideas and thinking about fabulous designs!
We will visit Tattershall Castle with the children to kick off the topic. This will involve a lot of exploring and a chance for the children to discover more about what daily life must have been like.
There are lots of exciting activities for the children to explore over the term. We will investigate different types and features of castles that people used to live in. The children will even have the opportunity to design and make their own castle with a working drawbridge!
The children will also look at famous towers and tunnels from around the world and identify their home country. The children will then have the opportunity to make their own world famous tower!
In Numeracy last term, we really focused on number by looking at multiplication and division in detail as well as place value, mass, fractions, position and direction.
This term we will be looking at addition and subtraction, 2d and 3d shapes, telling the time and using money!
We will be teaching the skills to the children on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and the children will be applying these skills on a Thursday. Learning on a Friday will consolidate and develop mental maths strategies and arithmetic skills.
In English, some children will be following the Read Write Inc programme and some will be involved in class based English sessions. These sessions will focus on all elements of writing. We will write poetry based on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes. The children will create a short poem in rhyming couplets based on a well-known fairy tale to share with the reception children. We will write an adventure story based on ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne and create our own class book and we will write letters to the staff at Tattershall Castle to thank them for our visit.
We will continue with RWI phonics and Spelling programmes three times a week and targeted group handwriting sessions twice weekly.
In R.E this term, we will be continuing with our learning about Jewish and Christian special books. We will be learning and sharing bible stories and expressing these through art, drama and writing.
P.E. in Term 4 will be on a Friday with the sports coach and they will be teaching the children the skills of throwing and catching. Please could your child bring their full PE kit at the beginning of the week so they will be able to take part as we do not keep spare kit in school. Just a reminder that the correct PE kit for school is: black shorts, white t shirt and trainers or plimsolls. A black tracksuit maybe worn in the cooler months.
If your child has their ears pierced, please could you ensure the earrings are taken out for PE or they will need to be covered in tape.
